PORTS OF CALL - Australia / New Zealand
Hamilton Island, Whitsunday Islands
Great news! You can stop looking for paradise now - we've located it just off the east coast of Queensland, Australia. Hamilton Island, the largest inhabited island of the Whitsundays, is a tourist haven with great cafes, restaurants, and shops, not to mention an almost endless list of exciting things to do. While many of these activities center around a little-known attraction called the Great Barrier Reef, you can always take a bush walk, cuddle a koala or perfect your golf swing at an aquatic driving range. And that's only the beginning. Hamilton Island is just the right blend of playground and paradise.
Don't Miss
You can't go to an island virtually synonymous with the Great Barrier Reef and not explore, well, the Great Barrier Reef. Fortunately for visitors, there are lots of ways to do it! Check out the stunning coral reefs by glass-bottom boat or take a scenic flight for a breathtaking bird's-eye view. You can also get a fish's-eye view on a snorkeling or scuba diving trip into the heart of this natural wonder.
Sporting Adventures
Hamilton Island is home to a unique variety of sports. Take a safari tour, hike through the bush or try target shooting at a professionally-run range. Fishing trips, speed-boat rides and go-karts are also popular activities for visitors. Of course, if you're looking for a free way to enjoy the island, swimming in some of the world's most beautiful waters is always a good bet.
Shopping for Bargains
You'll find a number of great shops throughout the resort center. Pick up groceries and souvenirs at the general store, and check out the Marina village boutiques for clothes and local crafts.
Local Flavours
While you're on the island, get a taste of some of Australia's seafood specialties like Sydney rock oysters, tiger prawns and yabbies (small freshwater lobsters). Your server should be able to suggest a locally-produced wine to enhance the flavor of your dish.
Currency
The local currency used on Hamilton Island is the Australian dollar (AUD). Credit cards are widely accepted. And you can use your ATM card at banks around the country as long as your card is connected to the international banking network. Traveler's checks are also accepted.
