Before You Cruise

What you'll need to look out for before you head out to sea.

PORTS OF CALL - Australia / New Zealand

Papeete, Tahiti French Polynesia

Brilliant blue lagoons, proud jagged peaks, coconut groves and a hint of gardenia in the air. Everything you've ever imagined about this island is true. An enchanting place to say the least, its little wonder Tahiti is a muse to so many. Herman Melville and Paul Gauguin certainly found some inspiration here. And Papeete, the island's very cosmopolitan city, has its fair share. So before you immerse yourself in Tahiti's earthy delights, make sure to visit Papeete's vibrant waterfront and colorful market, brimming with everything from fresh fruit to artisan treasures. You'll find it, well, picture perfect.

Don't Miss

If you're an art aficionado or a lover of supreme scenery, a drop into the Paul Gauguin Museum is in order. There's a small collection of work that chronicles Gauguin's interesting and, sometimes sad, life (he was an artist after all). Plus, its seaside location and gardens are spectacular. And better still, it's home to three mesmerizing tiki statues.

Sporting Adventures

With its awesome beach and reef breaks, surfing is all the rage here. And if you've ever wanted to learn how to hang ten, there are a few shops that offer lessons. Windsurfing and body boarding are also options for or anyone who would prefer to take baby steps.

Shopping for Bargains

There's some serious spending to be done in the city for the avid bargain hunter. Those searching for arts and crafts should visit the Papeete Market. Polynesian treasures such as drums, shark-tooth pendants, traditional music and iconic hand-carved tikis are here for the buying. And don't forget the fresh vanilla! It's a nice way to savor island life back home.

Local Flavours

From French cafés to Italian pizzerias, Papeete has something to satisfy everyone's cravings. And the atmosphere? Très, très bien.

Currency

The currency used in French Polynesia is the French Pacific Franc (CFP).
