Before You Cruise

What you'll need to look out for before you head out to sea.

PORTS OF CALL - Caribbean

Margarita Island, Venezuela

There's a good reason why Margarita Island is known as the "Pearl of the Caribbean." With 50 beaches - many of them still unspoiled - and the perfect conditions for windsurfing, visiting here is like stumbling upon a rare jewel.

Don't Miss

Visit the Castillo de San Carlos Borromeo, in Pampatar. Built in the 17th century, the fort was used for protection against pirate attacks and has impressive views of the beach and harbor.

Fun Things to Do

- Ride the waves at Playa Parguito, a popular surfing beach. Or if you have a more relaxing day in mind, you may enjoy the calmer waters of Playa Manzanillo.

- Spend the day walking around Porlamar, the island's largest city and main area of activity, filled with plenty of shops, restaurants and bars.

- Explore the grounds of Cerro El Copey National Park and Las Antenas, the highest point on the island.

Local Flavours

Food plays a very important role in Venezuelan culture. Its coffee is some of the best in the world, a fantastic variety of tropical fruit is readily available, and there's an abundance of fish and shellfish. The country even has a national dish called Pabellón Criollo, which is made up of shredded beef, black beans, white rice and fried plantains - a fruit similar to the banana.

Currency

Venezuela's currency is the Bolivar (VEB). Many hotels, restaurants and shops also accept major credit cards, which usually offer you a good exchange rate.
