PORTS OF CALL - Dubai / Emirates
Fujairah, United Arab Emirates
The mountainous landscape of Fujairah strikes a bold contrast with the other Emirates, which are primarily blanketed by desert. The weather is seasonal, though generally warm year-round, with an occasional rainy season in the winter months. Fajairah's unique geography, rich history, unspoiled natural beauty, and ultra-modern urban development draw tourists and business from around the world.
Don't Miss
With more than 30 large valleys in the region, there's plenty to attract nature-lovers interested in a day hike or just a spectacular view. However, most travelers agree The Al Wurayah valley, located 42km to the north of Fujairah, is a must-see. Its dramatic scenery, highlighted by the lovely Al Wurayah waterfalls, attracts tourists year-round.
Sporting Adventures
Fujairah presents endless opportunities for off-road driving through desert and rugged, boulder-strewn valleys, but it is also a region renowned for its many aquatic activities. In addition to water sports such as snorkeling, scuba diving, jet skiing and fishing, Fujairah's crystal waters are host to the annual Power Boat racing world championship.
Local Flavours
Whether you're on a budget or going gourmet, Fujairah offers a wide range of restaurants featuring regional and international cuisines. Wherever you decide to eat, be sure to sample some of the Mediterranean specialties-tabbouleh, hummus, and stuffed grape vine leaves-or one of Fujairah's local delicacies such as hammour fish. (Also known as Grouper Fish.)
Currency
Fujairah's currency is the United Arab Emirates dirham (AED). When dining, most restaurant bills will include an additional 10% service charge and another 10% municipality tax. If a price is 'net,' this means that all taxes and service charges have been included. Also, when taking a taxi, it is customary to round the fare up to the nearest dirham.
