PORTS OF CALL - Europe
Alexandria, Egypt
Founded by its namesake, Alexander the Great in 332 B.C., Alexandria has been home to many historical figures, including Cleopatra, Mark Antony, Julius Caesar and Euclid. Today the city has a distinctly Mediterranean feel, perhaps a remainder of its ancient Roman connection. The charming seaside promenade, colonial buildings and wide avenues make it an exotic, romantic destination.
Don't Miss
As with most of Egypt, the historical landmarks here are a must-see. Take time to explore the Roman Amphitheatre, Pompei's Pillar and the Catacombs of Kom ash-Shuqqafa, dating back to the second century A.D.
Sporting Adventures
Like so much of the world, Alexandria is in love with football (soccer). The city boasts four stadiums: Haras El-Hodood stadium, Alexandria stadium, El-Krom stadium and the new Borj Al-Arab stadium, seating up to 80,000 spectators. Catch an exciting match in any of these stadiums for a memorable experience.
Local Flavours
Influenced by its neighbors, Egyptian cuisine is a combination of Greek, Turkish, Lebanese, Palestinian, and Syrian cooking. You'll find delicious, satisfying bean dishes like tomato-y ful and crispy, fried falafel many places. Grilled meats are also popular, in the forms of kebabs and shawirma.
Currency
Egypt's official currency is the Egyptian Pound (EGP). Credit cards and traveler's checks are also widely accepted.
