PORTS OF CALL - Panama Canal

Puerto Quetzal (Guatemala City), Guatemala

For centuries, Guatemala's cobblestone streets, breathtaking landscapes and diverse cultures have welcomed visitors from all over the world, helping to make Guatemala City the widely celebrated jewel of Central America. Today, travelers in search of rich Mayan history and colonial charm continue to be lured to this capital city's shores. What may come as a surprise, though, is the impressive selection of fine restaurants and hotels, outstanding museums and vibrant nightlife that Guatemala City has to offer! Its strong mix of European and indigenous cultures makes for a dynamic urban vibe.

Don't Miss

When visiting a city that boasts such abundant history, you won't want to miss out on one of its oldest landmarks. Built between 1782 and 1868, the Catedral Metropolitano stands as an extraordinary example of colonial architecture in the Old City, adorned inside with elaborate altars and divine pieces of colonial religious art. It truly is a must-see!

Sporting Adventures

Though there are few sporting adventures to be had within the city limits, you can find exciting ways to get out and explore the beautiful tropical landscape surrounding it. Spend a day biking or hiking through the mountains and volcanoes just outside Guatemala City. If golf is your game, see if you can arrange a tee-time at one of several nearby courses.

Shopping for Bargains

Take home a little bit of Guatemala City in some of the beatiful handicrafts made by local artisans. You'll find everything from quality leather goods and silver accessories to tablecloths and ceramics bearing traditional Guatamalan detailing. You can also find good deals on furniture made in Antigua - just be sure to arrange for any larger purchases to be shipped to your home address.

Local Flavours

If you like Mexican food, you're bound to enjoy the fare served in Guatemala. Apart from some subtle Spanish, Indian and French influences, Guatemalan food relies largely on the same bean- and corn-based staples as its neighbor to the north. Lunch is the main meal in Guatemala, and you can count on lots of delicious combinations of rice, beans, cheese, guacamole and meats like chicken, pork or beef to choose from. Oh, and of course, you'll need your cup of joe in the morning. Just a warning, you may have to pinch yourself - the locally-grown coffee tastes like a dream!

Currency

The currency of Guatemala is the quetzal, named after the country's national bird the Resplendent Quetzal. One quetzal is made up of 100 cents.
