PORTS OF CALL - South America

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Famous as the home of Evita Peron, Buenos Aires is more European than South American in feel. Cobbled streets, charming cafés and cosmopolitan restaurants all give it a unique flair befitting the resilient people who live here. Through good times and hard, Buenos Aires has remained the political, economic and cultural heart of Argentina. Wander the streets and plazas and take in the colorful architecture as you explore this charming, historic city.

Don't Miss

Buenos Aires is a historic city and nowhere is that more evident than the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA). Home to the private art collection of art collector Eduardo Costantini, it features one of the most extensive collections of Latin American art in the world. You'll find work from important artists like Antonio Berni, Pedro Figari, Frida Kahlo, Cândido Portinari, Diego Rivera, and Antonio Siguí. Explore the airy halls and retrace the history and cultural growth of Latin America through artwork.

While On Your Cruisetour

Buenos Aires has been called the Paris of the South. And just like the "City of Lights," a cruisetour of this lively cosmopolitan capital (it's the birthplace of the fiery tango, after all) and surrounding area has a little something for everyone. This professionally guided tour includes a visit to the Plaza de Mayo and historic town hall, and magnificent Nuestra Senora del Pilar Church, considered a natural treasure. Buenos Aires has also been referred to as the gateway to all things Argentine. And just a short ride beyond that gate lays gaucho country. You'll get to visit El Rosario de Areco Estancia, where gauchos (South American cowboys) tend the local cattle herds much the way their ancestors did. You'll even get to experience an authentic cowboy BBQ featuring prized Argentinean beef and fine local wine. Bring plenty of film - and a big appetite.

Sporting Adventures

To experience a little of the passion of Buenos Aires, head to a dance hall or a café for a quick tango class. The romantic dance is synonymous with the city and people find any excuse to take a spin. If dancing isn't your style, hit the links. Argentines may not take their golf as seriously as their dancing, but with more than 200 courses, it is a popular alternative. Head to Cancha de Golf de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, just 10 minutes from downtown. This par-71 course offers great scenery and a good challenge.

Shopping for Bargains

Stroll down Calle Florida, peering in the windows of the boutiques, souvenir shops and bookstores. You'll find beautiful leather goods like belts, jackets and even shoes at bargain prices. They make wonderful souvenirs - and are a great way to bring this charming destination home with you.

Local Flavours

Argentines love their beef. And the most popular places for them to enjoy it are parrillas - restaurants specializing in grilled meat. Try the entrañas (tripe) and achuras (sweetbreads, blood sausages, kidneys) for starters, accompanied by rich provoleta (grilled provolone cheese sprinkled with olive oil and oregano) and garlic-soaked grilled red peppers. Then, for the main course, enjoy flavorful, grilled Argentine beef, served with a salad and French fries.

Currency

Argentina's currency is the Argentine peso (ARS). Most stores accept credit cards; however, you may get a discount if you pay with cash.
