PORTS OF CALL - South America

Easter Island, Chile

If you're looking to get away from it all, this is with out a doubt THE place. Easter Island, or Rapa Nuii as the locals call it, is around 2000 miles away from civilization - and about as laid-back as you can get. (The speed limit is a lazy 12mph.) But aside from its low-key lifestyle, the intrigue of this tiny atoll in the Pacific is the iconic stone monoliths that still have archaeologists baffled. The island is teeming with them - over 600 at last count, some 30 feet tall and weighing 20 tons. What do they signify? Who were their creators? And how on earth did they move them? You can decide for yourself. The answers are still up for grabs.

While On Your Cruisetour

Because of the island's intimate size you won't have a problem squeezing in a generous amount of sightseeing. In fact, you'll begin your adventure searching for the mythical stone statues, or moai as the locals call them, with a tour of the Southeast coast and the extraordinary sites of Ahu Vaihú, Ahu Akahang, and Anakena Beach. Anaken, is a warm cove in the Pacific surrounded by white sand and coconut palms. You may or may not find a lifeguard on duty but you will most certainly find a tribe of moai standing watch.

Make sure to pack binoculars for your tour of the volcanic crater of Rano Kau; it's home to some of the most breathtaking views on the island.

Fun Things to Do

- Measuring 40 sq miles, it's not hard to forget that the place is surrounded by the most seductive stretch of ocean in the world. So make sure to test the waters with a swim or a canoe tour.

- There are also plenty of hiking adventures available. And considering there are almost as many horses on the island as people, riding tours are a pretty popular way to get around.

- If you're looking to bring home a miniature Moai or other handcrafted memorabilia, you'll find a healthy share of vendors selling souvenirs at Orongo and Anakena. And if you're on the hunt for a more upscale selection, there's a small gift shop at the Museo Antropológico.

Currency

The Chilean peso is the official currency of Easter Island. The American dollar is usually accepted but credit cards are not.
