PORTS OF CALL - South America
Iguazu Falls, Argentina
Borne out of a volcanic eruption over 100 million years ago, Iguazú Falls is one of the most awe-inspiring natural wonders in all of South America, if not the world. To put it into perspective in terms of the sheer grandeur of the place, Iguazú is taller and four times wider than Niagara Falls, with water plummeting down at an average of 553 cubic feet per second. Despite its popularity, you may be surprised to find Iguazú isn't too over-developed. On the contrary, this Natural World Heritage Site is shrouded with subtropical rainforests that are home to over 2000 species of flora, 400 species of birds, tons of wild animals and endless adventure.
While On Your Cruisetour
Considering the site is shared by both Argentina and Brazil, it's best to explore Iguazú from both sides. Argentina offers an up-close and personal encounter first with a walking tour of the Lower Circuit then onboard a Zodiac speedboat for a thrilling ride through the great walls of water. Brazil on the other hand, boasts more panoramic and otherworldly outings complete with a trek through Iguazú National Park. Be on the lookout for rainbows!
Fun Things to Do
- You won't want to miss La Garganta del Diablo, "the Devil's Throat", the wildest waterfall of them all. Feeling extra adventurous? Hop on a helicopter for the ultimate bird's-eye view.
- Sunrise and sunset are the best times to go bird peeping in Iguazú National Park. With over 450 species it won't be difficult to spot toucans, macaws, parrots, guamacayos, and many other exotic beauties.
Currency
The Peso is the official currency of Argentina. Most credit cards are accepted in major cities, although some places will ask for a photo ID. ATM machines are accessible 24 hours a day in major cities and large towns, providing a convenient way to obtain pesos.
