Before You Cruise

What you'll need to look out for before you head out to sea.

PORTS OF CALL - South America

Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica

Teeming with primitive rainforests, coffee plantations and a ginormous gathering of colorful creatures, Costa Rica is eco-fabulous and this tiny port town is your ticket in. Trek through forests over-flowing with wild fig trees and howler monkeys. Grab a long-board and learn to surf in the warm waters of the Central Pacific. Or charter a boat and angle for blue marlin.

Don't Miss

Spend a day exploring the Biological Reserve of Carara where you'll encounter one of the most diverse collections of plants and animals in the country. The fusion of dry foothills and lush forests makes it the premier place to scan exotic wildlife. In fact, birders come from every corner of the world to cast their eyes on Carara's amazing assortment of feathered friends. And with turkey vultures, laughing falcons and blue-crowned motmots on the list, who wouldn't?

Here's a tip: The scarlet macaw soaring at sunset is a particularly awesome sight. A great place to witness it is from atop the Tarcoles River Bridge. Which also happens to be the hot place to spot crocs.

Sporting Adventures

If all the bird watching has got you curious then give in to your adventurous side and take flight. Parasailing is very popular in Caldera. The destination's steep cliffs and stunning Pacific coastline make it ideal to see from the sky.

Shopping for Bargains

Wherever you're headed, you're sure to come across local artisans selling souvenirs. Some of the unique handicrafts include palm-leaf baskets, pottery and figurines carved from local wood. And don't forget to take home a bag or two of freshly picked coffee beans.

Local Flavours

Rice and beans are a Costa Rican staple. The breakfast version is called gallo pinto and it's usually part of a spread served with eggs, steak, or seafood and fresh homegrown fruit. And yes, a cup of the world's richest coffee.

Currency

The currency in Puerto Caldera is the Costa Rican colon (CRC). Many hotels, restaurants and shops also accept major credit cards, which usually offer you a good exchange rate.
