Cadiz, Spain
Cádiz may, in fact, be the oldest inhabited city in the western world, with more than 3,000 years of history. Located on the southern coast of Spain, it borders both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Christopher Columbus departed on two of his voyages to the New World from here and with his discovery of the Americas, Cádiz quickly grew into a major city by importing gold and silver and exporting local specialties like sherry and cork. By the 18th century, Cádiz had become the wealthiest port in Western Europe. Amazingly, this beautiful coastal city has been largely undiscovered by international tourists; however, it is a popular destination for Spaniards in the summer and during Carnival in February and March.

The cathedral in Cádiz is by far its best-known landmark. It was built in the 18th century with gold imported from the New World. There is also a museum with a breathtaking, and priceless, collection of gold, silver and jewels, and the crypt of the great Cádiz-born composer Manuel de Falla.
Fun Things to Do
- Stroll through the charming Plaza de Mina, lined with sidewalk cafés and remarkable architecture. It's also home to the Fine Arts and Archaeology Museum.
- Climb to the top of the Torre Tavira, one of the 160 watchtowers built in the 18th century, for a view of the entire city.
- Relax on one of the beautiful white-sand beaches.
- Visit the Oratorio de Santa Cruz church, home to several paintings by Francisco Goya.
- Take in the scenery. With water surrounding the city on three sides, Cadiz is famous for its breathtaking landscapes and ocean views.
Local Flavours
Enjoy a Spanish-style lunch, usually eaten between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in several courses. Later in the day, stop by one of the local bars for tapas - small portions of fish, meat or cheese. You'll most likely be served the local specialties of the Andalucia region, including jamon serrano (cured ham) and various types of seafood, like jumbo prawns, baby squid, clams, octopus and sea bass.
Currency
The Euro (EUR), the currency of the European Union, is the official currency of Spain. Many stores and restaurants also accept major credit cards, which usually offer you a good exchange rate. When shopping, remember there is a Value-Added Tax added to most purchases.
