PORTS OF CALL - Transatlantic

Recife, Brazil

Recife (pronounced "he-si-fee") is an enchanting port city named for the coral reefs that align its coasts. Recife is brimming with vibrant culture and gorgeous beaches and is a major draw for tourists from all over during Carnaval, one of the biggest parties in the world. In Recife, the waters are crystal clear, excitement is everywhere, and you will find yet another great stop on your vacation.

Don't Miss

Pick a beach. Any beach. No one comes to Recife without planning some serious time in the sand. Its coast is one of the most beautiful in Brazil and the Boa Viagem beach is one of the best known in Brazil. There are plenty of vendors serving food and drinks where you sit, so you can relax and enjoy a cerveja (the Portuguese word for beer). The beach is a short drive from Recife and is easily accessible with frequent bus service.

Sporting Adventures

Brazil is a soccer-mad country and Recife fits right in. You'll definitely want to take a tour of Arruda Stadium, where the local club teams play. If you're fortunate, a game may even be going on when you're there. But you will definitely see many kids playing in the streets, all hoping to be the next great star for the Brazilian national team. And you certainly won't want to miss out on the abundance of water sports action. There is a ton to do like water skiing, sailing, and windsurfing.

Shopping for Bargains

The main shopping centers in Recife are Shopping Recife, Tacaruna, Shopping Guararapes, and Plaza Shopping. They offer a great selection of shops, a bowling alley, movie theaters, and various restaurants where you can sample the local specialties. Mercado São José, across the river from Recife Antigo, is a fabulous place to buy jewelry made of coconut, palm fronds, and different seeds, plus adorable rag dolls and straw bags.

Local Flavours

One of the finest local delicacies of Recife is a popular soup called Caldinho, which comes in a variety of flavors from black bean to shrimp, and is made with bacon bits and fried garlic. Also, you won't want to miss the Bolo de Rolo, a delicious paper-thin cake, rolled with a filling of guava paste.

Currency

The local currency is the Brazilian Real. Take note, taxis and buses at the airport only accept Brazilian currency in cash. But credit cards are widely accepted in most stores and restaurants.
