PORTS OF CALL - Transatlantic
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
As the oldest city in the New World, Santo Domingo is filled with history and culture. Christopher Columbus sailed here, as did Ponce de Leon who settled Puerto Rico, and Hernando Cortés who continued on to what is now Mexico. And some things haven't changed. Today it's an influential city in the Caribbean economy, as well as home to bustling nightlife and beautiful scenery.
Don't Miss
An absolute must see in Santo Domingo is the Old City. Walk through the city's historic section and visit the museums and parks. The main street along the water is lined with boutiques and outdoor cafés.
Fun Things to Do
- Visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor. This cathedral, the oldest in the Americas, dates back to 1540.
- Tour the Alcázar de Colon, a castle that was originally built for Christopher Columbus' son. It is made out of coral limestone and encompasses nearly two dozen rooms.
- See the Columbus Lighthouse, made up of 149 searchlights and a 70-kilowatt beam.
Shopping for Bargains
Open-air markets, such as the national market, El Mercado Modelo, offer great buys - just remember to bargain with the shopkeeper, you're not expected to pay the initial price offered. You'll most likely see the national gem, amber, as well as larimar, the Dominican turquoise, and of course, hand-rolled cigars.
Local Flavours
You'll see many cultures represented in the local cuisine (even chain restaurants from the United States). But if you're looking for traditional Dominican flavor, try plantains, which are similar to bananas. They are often sliced and fried or made into a mofonog, a ball of plantains that has been salted and roasted.
Currency
The official currency of the Dominican Republic is the Dominican Peso (DOP). Many stores and restaurants also accept major credit cards, which usually offer you a good exchange rate.
